With the revised rules for obtaining a driver’s license, the Union’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways removed a number of obstacles that were hampering the process. While many people have to wait a long time for their time slot to take a driving test, others are deterred by the cumbersome nature of going to a Regional Transportation Office (RTO).
But with recent rule changes and the digitization of the process, obtaining a driver’s license is now a relatively smooth process.
In accordance with the new rules, an aspiring driver’s license can now obtain a license without having to physically travel to apply for it. In addition, the permanent license can now be obtained even without passing a driving test in an RTO. Here’s what you need to know:
Applications for new diving licenses can now be made online by visiting the sarathi.parivahan.gov.in website from where you can select your state and you will be directed to an online portal to apply.
If you are applying for a permanent license, someone will need to submit an application form called Form 4, which can be downloaded from the website. In addition, the person must have a learner’s license for the category of vehicle for which the permanent license is requested. You will also need to submit the fees for the particular license requested, according to the list on the official website.
You will need to make an appointment with the competent authority for the test or waive the test according to the new rules of the Ministry of Transport.
Avoid the driving test at the RTO
Under the revised rules, individuals will not need to take a driving test at the OPI. Implemented from July 1, 2021, the new rules provide the option for an individual to attend a government-approved private training school and take a driving course instead of having to take a test at the RTO.
Individuals who successfully undertake the driving course at a training center will be exempt from having to schedule a driving test with an RTO when applying for their license. This 29 hour course will consist of practical and theoretical sections divided into 21 hours of basic driving lessons and 8 hours of theory on rules and regulations etc.
Deadline for obtaining a driver’s license
After obtaining a learner’s license, a person can apply for a permanent driver’s license after a period of 30 days. A person can apply for a permanent driver’s license within 180 days of issuance of the learner’s license. If you opt for a training center, they will assist you in obtaining the permit.
Once you apply for a permanent driver’s license, you will need to take an exam if you have not taken a driving course at a government-approved training center. When you complete this process you will receive a receipt which will serve as a driver’s license until the actual copy reaches by speed post.
