Self-made entrepreneur opens New York driving school for adults on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Obtaining a driver’s license is a milestone in most people’s lives. For this reason, Simon Miyerov said he often tells people, “You will always remember your driving instructor.”

Having always dreamed of being a self-taught entrepreneur, Miyerov said he believed he could make a difference as a driving instructor.

“From a young age, I always wanted to create something rewarding,” he said. “I remember my personal journey of learning to drive with driving instructors and saw huge potential for improvement in the process. I created Drive Rite Academy with the aim of bringing a refreshing change to the driving school industry.

Miyerov said his other inspiration for opening driving schools was to teach safe driving techniques in one of the busiest cities in the world.

“Being a New Yorker and seeing how people drive on the streets, I really wanted to make the streets safer for everyone,” he said.

“While most Staten Island driver training programs are aimed at teens, we are unique in that our clients come from all walks of life. From college students to professionals. .. the typical age range of our customers is 20 to 35+,” said Miyerov (Courtesy Simon Miyerov)

After opening his first Drive Rite Academy location in Brooklyn in 2014, Miyerov recalled seeing the need for expansion. So in 2016 it opened a branch in downtown Brooklyn, and in January 2022 it expanded to Dongan Hills.

“We’ve received many inquiries from students who live on Staten Island asking if we provide services there,” Miyerov said. “Student demand helped us determine that Staten Island would be our next branch. Also, most of our Staten Island instructors actually live on Staten Island, so this was a great opportunity for them to teach students in their neighborhood.

BEST ADVICE

Although he learned many valuable business skills while earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Market Management from Baruch College in Manhattan, Miyerov said the best entrepreneurial advice he ever received came from his mentor, Carlos Cordova, which previously owned Learn-Rite Driving. School.

“When I started in the company, I didn’t know too many people in the field. Carlos was always ready to lend a hand and offer advice. It turned out to be a great support system for me along the way,” recalls Miyerov.

“He said to me, ‘Don’t stress about the little things.’ ..He said customers always want everything right away. Sometimes they don’t understand that we have to comply with all DMVs [Department of Motor Vehicles] standards and rules and regulations. … He helped me realize that if you are patient, things will work out,” Miyerov added.

FOCUS ON ADULTS

Instead of focusing on teens, who often use driving school to supplement what they learn in New York State’s mandatory driver education program, which is required to get a permitted at 17, Miyerov said his schools focused on adults.

“While most Staten Island driver training programs are aimed at teens, we are unique in that our clients come from all walks of life. From college students to professionals. .. the typical age range of our clients is 20 to 35+,” he said. “But we also teach teenagers.”

Once a person turns 18, New York State does not require a driver education program. Instead, people 18 and older only need to take the five-hour pre-licensing course. But there is no driving instruction included in this course.

This is where DriveRite comes in.

“Many of our students have never felt the need to learn to drive,” Miyerov said. “We also believe that due to the increasing number of people moving to Staten Island from other areas, our business has become very necessary. Our clientele comes from all walks of life and around the world.”

With five cars and six instructors at his Staten Island branch, Miyerov said his roster of services includes driving lessons, the five-hour pre-licensing course and test-drive services.

“We also offer continuing education services to students who already have a driver’s licence, such as refresher courses and highway courses. We are also one of the few providers in New York State that specializes in expedited road test appointments, to make the process seamless for our students,” he said.

Along with providing safe driving skills, Miyerov said he enjoys giving people the freedom to drive and be less reliant on public transport.

“This field is very rewarding because it really gives me the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. Not only are we making the roads safer for everyone, but we are also giving people life skills, achievements and freedoms. So I would say my students inspire me,” he said.
