Instagram may soon ask for your driver’s license to verify your age

On Thursday, Instagram, owned by Meta, said it was testing new options for people to verify their age by uploading identification such as a driver’s license or ID card, as well as other methods in the goal of providing age-appropriate experiences on the platform.

Starting with the United States, if someone tries to change their birthday on Instagram from under 18 to 18 or over, Instagram will ask them to verify their age.

They can verify their age by uploading their ID, record a video selfie, or ask mutual friends to verify their age. The person vouching must be at least 18 years old and must not be vouching for anyone else at the time.

“We’re testing this to make sure teens and adults have the right experience for their age group. We’re also partnering with Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification, to help ensure privacy of individuals,” the company said. in a report.

“Your ID will be stored securely on our servers and will be deleted within 30 days,” he added.

Users can choose to upload a video selfie to verify their age.

“After taking a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti, and nothing else. The technology cannot recognize your identity – just your age,” the company informed.

In 2019, Instagram started asking people to provide their age when signing up.

“We require people to be at least 13 years old to sign up for Instagram. In some countries, our minimum age is higher,” Instagram said.

For teens (ages 13-17), Instagram offers them age-appropriate experiences, like putting them in private accounts by default, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don’t know, and limiting the options they don’t know. advertisers have to reach them with advertisements.

“If you choose to upload a video selfie to verify your age, Meta and Yoti will delete it once your age is confirmed. Your video is only used to verify your age. If you choose to upload an ID, after you have send us a copy of your ID, it will be encrypted and stored securely,” Instagram said.
