The 'DIRT Ripper' Rips Competition

To Claim Title To 'BUDWEISER 30' !

By: Randy Matheny

Muskingum County Speedway presented the 'BUDWEISER 30' Late Model special Saturday night and it was the 'Dirt Ripper' Donnie Moran that claimed the $2,500 top prize after starting from the outside pole position in the 30-lap main event. Chad Hina picked up an extra $100 from Balderson Dodge for his fast time in qualifying rounds and Aaron Scott picked up and extra $110 from American Payroll Advance for his Hard Charger efforts.

The special tire rule was lifted for the late model division for the remainder of the 2002 racing season.

25 late models registered to stake a try at the title and the payoff of the BUDWEISER 30 special event but it was Rob House starting the main event from the pole position with Donnie Moran alongside. Brad Goff, John Mallett, Doug Dodd, Chad Hina, Jamey Miller, Charlie Maloney, Ty Myers and Keith Berner followed in the next ten positions in the 20-car field.

The start of the feature was marred by a caution as John Mallett spun in turn #4 and collected the cars of Miller and Maloney with Miller slamming into the turn #4 wall very hard. Drivers were shaken for a few seconds but okay as Miller had to be towed to the pit area.

The field continued with a double-file restart and it was a race between Moran and House for the first few laps before Moran pulled ahead and never gave up the top spot for the win at the end, driving his #99 QPI Tools sponsored Rayburn Chassis with a Charlie Fisher Engine under the hood.

Several caution periods slowed racing action on laps 5, 6 and 8 for spins by Mallett, Conley and Weekly. Moran held onto the lead with a show of confidence that he has acquired over the many years, growing up and perfecting his driving style, on the Muskingum County Speedway track surface.

Several lapped cars saw House working his way around other drivers, trying to catch up to Moran and make a pass but Moran took the win as House, Maloney, Scott and Berner claimed the top five spots.
